Episode 6 - Were You Prepared?

Ctrl Alt WoW Episode 006 – Were you prepared January 20, 2007
Segment I. What’s Going On
A. Can I have your attention please -
B. Installing and running Burning Crusade – success
C. My train was late into Chicago, Amtrak was nice, they put us up in a hotel, but that meant I wouldn’t be getting home on Monday night as I planned. I would have had just enough time to get in line at Ebgames and pick up the 2 copies I had reserved. So Sunday night I’m stuck in Chicago trying to figure out how to get my copies of BC. I would be on the train for almost 24 hours once I left Chicago Monday night, so there would be no way to get it. Could I ask my husband to go to Ebgames Monday night and stand in line? I don’t think so.
No. 1. Very very painless. The installation took went pretty fast. Four disks, a 163 mb patch, then a 4.3 mb patch and then that opening screen
No. 2. I started a blood elf and of course the starting area was jam packed. But there was no lag and it was like Time Square on New Year’s Eve. People were dancing and flirting and laughing to try out all the new emotes.
D. I was able to mail items to my Burning Crusade character and invite her to the guild from a character on the non updated side.
E. I don’t have an alt over 55, so no Outlands for me. I was excited about getting my 47 Hunter Leatherworker over 300. I went to the Tribal Leatherworker trainer in Strangethorn Vale and picked up some new recipes but it turns out to go over 300, she has to go to Outland and find a Grand Master Trainer in, yep you guessed it, Outland
F. Burning Crusade – A success in my book

Segment II. WoW News
A. Topping the 8 million mark
B. Server Splitups

Segment III. Alt Round Up –
A. Who’s Doing what
No. 1. I’ve been mostly busy with the twins, Zee and Pril, brother and sister Blood Elves, same coloring and hair. Zee male rogue and Pril female hunter. They’ve been leveling mostly in Eversong Woods. One thing I like to do is sometimes grab the first profession handy. This way they can begin to make stuff and then unlearn it and learn the ones they really want. So Pril got alchemy from that alchemist at the party at Saltheril’s Haven and Zee got herbalism there as well. So he was able to pick up some bloodthistle. He had already gotten Jewelcrafting from the trainer in the inn in Falconwing Square in the Ruins of Silvermoon. I got them both up to 10 and Pril got pet taming, there’s a quest at Farstrider Retreat, not to be confused with Farstrider Square, which is in Silvermoon.
No. 2. Rilfire got the guild and turned it over to Aprillian (was able to get Aprillian again on Alleria) and she designed the new tabard, an octopus representing the many alts.
No. 3. Rilfire made a couple of things, ironfeather
No. 4. Pryl in Westfall
No. 5. Illia making money –
No. 6. Sent a 3 storage alts to Silvermoon City via the Translocator in UC – Aranxcha, Miasha and Theeo (actually Theeo’s a level 17 but he also had all the cooking supplies for leveling cooking) . They were able to help better leather pants and shirts, some weapons and supplies.
No. 7. Sent Rillia my level 36 Rogue Blacksmith/Enchanter to give a couple of boosts. Particularly speed to boots. But it’s kind of tricky with two accounts. Rillia is on the account with Zee so she could enchant Pril’s stuff, but not Zee. Zee’s stuff had to be traded to Pril, echanted by Rillia and then traded back to Zee. Ooh and Rillia had over 30 bars of silver so she gave a bunch to Pril to give to Zee and now Zee
No. 8. So now Zee and Pril are pretty set up, nothing to special but a few enchants and nice gear and they are out questing heading towards Ghostland, a few quests in Tranquillium and then back to Silvermoon City when I decided Pril needs Ressan the Needler as a pet. So they both went through the Translocater and out into Trisfal Glades where they picked up some quests in Brill and headed into the forest. The first time Pril died trying to tame Ressan and Zee ran away so they wouldn’t have to kill him. Then when she came back, she tamed him the second time and now she’s been hunting with them doing the Brill quests. I’ve got pix on the web site http://ctrlaltwow.blogspot.com
B. Ideas/Discussion
No. 1. If you can’t have two accounts, just be sure to send anything you might need enchanted to your enchanter before you equipped it if it’s bind on equip
No. 2. I was able to get an alt from sunstrider Isle to Fairbreeze Village at level 1 without her coming in to contact with any mobs. Of course a lot of this had to do with all of the activity. So right now might be a good time to get a bank in Silvermoon city. Also, with the translocater from UC to Silvermoon City, an undead bank might work as well.
No. 3. Create follow macro and place in the same number slot for every following character. Have the following alt complete the no. of collection quest first, that way the leading one can still identify the quest drops

Segment IV. Server Shout out
A. Alleria
No. 1. To Kokoh
B. Silverhand
No. 1. Server splitup

Segment V. In The House – Discussing what is going on in our real lives that has been affected by playing World of Warcraft
A. Lots of people taking off from work and school
B. I almost panicked when I realized my train was going to be delayed in to Chicago. I was constantly watching the times we arrived and I had to hold back on pestering the train crew. Then I started calculating taking the bus to New York, which would have been about a 24 hour bus ride and then catching a train from there, just to get home by Mon night.

Segment VI. Favorite Places/Things about WoW
A. Eversong Woods
No. 1. It’s really pretty, I love two sides to Silvermoon City
Segment VII. Email –
A. See below.
B. Still looking for some
No. 1. Ctrlaltwow@gmail.com - email
No. 2. http://ctrlaltwow.blogspot.com - website/blog
No. 3. http://Ctrlaltwow.podcastspot.com - podcast site

Segment VIII. Closing Thoughts
A. Burning Crusade
No. 1. A couple of good reviews on iTunes
No. 2. Trying to stay focus but would like some more feedback

Hi, i like the show a lot. I have been playing WoW for about 7 months and have gotten hooked on it just like everyone else, but it had become kind of a vice for me because it eats in to my free time so much. I was on the verge of deleting my level 60 and all of my alts and leaving the game for good. But on the day that i was going to do it i met a level 18 warlock, named Yosie, in west fall while playing on my priest alt for the last time (or so i thought). She sent me a random group invite and asked me if i would like to quest together, so i decided to use my 60 for one last good deed before it got deleted and got on Nidus (my 60 main). I helped her finish her quests in west fall, since I am a fire mage this was an easy task for me (AoE FTW). We had fun and chatted about our real lives and about WoW, it turned out that she had only been playing for 2 weeks. In return for my good deed she gave me a guild invite to , which is the guild I am in now and its the best guild i have ever been in, and i was very grateful. The next day we grouped again and had even more fun together, I helped her get her Sucubis quest done and had fun joking around and talking in the party chat. Sadly Yosei deleted her character, but the fun that i had those 2 days made me realize that WoW is more then a video game its a social experiment and that i was part of a global community. So i made a New Years resolution to keep playing WoW but in moderation, so instead of deleting my 60 i just deleted my alts. I enjoy your podcast and i hope you don't get discouraged, your part of a global community too and you should make sure your voice is heard even if its not the loudest.

Ctrl Alt WoW Episode 005 Are You Prepared?

Segment I. What’s Going On
A. I took a trip to California for MacWorld. Tried to do last week’s podcast in a train station, not a good idea. Was going to do this one on the train but learned from my mistake.
B. Just to familiarize those who didn’t listen to the first couple of podcasts or who might not remember, I divide my podcast into chapters, this way you can easily move back and forward within the podcasts. The segments are:
No. 1. What’s Going On – this one
No. 2. WoW News
No. 3. Alt Round Up – I did have the Burning Crusade Beta in the line up but now that it’s about to go Gold, any discussion about BC will just fall into the normal layout.
No. 4. Server Shoutout – Listeners can email me and mention their guilds or just say hello
No. 5. In the House – How WoW affects you at home and how your home affects your WoW.
No. 6. Favorite Places in WoW – discusses little things about WoW that anyone can share, things that normally go unnoticed.
No. 7. Emails, when and if I get any.
No. 8. Closing thoughts about the show
C. There was a patch last Tues Jan 8th that made some changes
No. 1. Ore now stackable by 20
No. 2. Add Ons need to be updated- the two main ones I use were updated
1. Titan Panel
2. SellValue
3. Found a new one while I was on Curse Gaming– List My Junk http://wow.curse-gaming.com/en/files/details/2623/list-my-junk-by-zayla/

Segment II. WoW News
A. Stores will be open at midnight on Monday night/Tuesday morning to sell the Expansion pack
B. I patched to 2.04 but I guess there was a 2.05 version that caused some havoc.

Segment III. Alt Round Up – All Alts transferred to Baelgun except for one on each account. There were some glitches that caused delays, but the blues on the WoW forums said they were working on it.
A. Who’s Doing what
No. 1. Treshel
No. 2. Prilfire gathering in Badlands
No. 3. Pryl in Westfall
No. 4. Rilfire headed to Undercity to purchase a Guild Charter from the Guild Master there. She’s going to start Ctrl Alt WoW. Aprillian was going to do it, but she’s stuck in the transfer queue. This means, for those who don’t already know, after she purchases the Guild Charter from the Guild Master for 10 silver she has to find 9 other unique accounts to sign the charter and then she’ll have a guild. By unique I mean only one alt from any account can sign, so you can’t make a guild by having you and your nine alts sign it. So, if you don’t have 9 people all ready to join your guild, it involves running around asking total strangers to sign, usually you offer them 50 silver. Some will ask for more, some will do it for free. Once you have the 9 names, you go back to the Guild Master and register your guild and then you will have a guild with guild chat and you will be the Guild leader. Most of the people you’ve asked to sign your charter will leave. Which is okay, because I just wanted the guild because I like having all of my alts in the same guild because it makes it easier to keep track of them and automatically makes their names come up in the mailbox to entry line when you start typing the first few letters.
B. Ideas/Discussion
No. 1. Your First Alt. An alt, by definition, is a backup to your main character. What generally happens is you make a character and run around learning how to do stuff. Then you either start running out of space in your bags and inventory, or you need something you can’t make and don’t want to pay a lot for on the Auction House, or you want to try another class. In fact, you might find one of your alts becomes your main.
No. 2. The Banker Alt – some call this alt their mule

Segment IV. Server Shout out
A. Baelgun
No. 1. From Whom
No. 2. Aprillian
B. Server

Segment V. In The House – Discussing what is going on in our real lives that has been affected by playing World of Warcraft
A. My Trip to MacWorld – laptop data plan with Cingular
No. 1. Played Sims 2 when out of signal range
B. Trains late – wanted to try to get back home by Monday night, drove me crazy

Segment VI. Favorite Places/Things about WoW
A. Stormwind
No. 1. don’t like all the bridges
No. 2. But maybe it’s because I’m Horde
B. Burning Crusade – new places – send email

Segment VII. Email –
A. Still looking for some
No. 1. Ctrlaltwow@gmail.com - email
No. 2. http://ctrlaltwow.blogspot.com - website/blog
No. 3. http://Ctrlaltwow.podcastspot.com - podcast site
Just checked my email and Zeam from the Frostmourne server writes “hi aprillian just dropping a line to say that i enjoy listening to your showand keep it up.” Thank you Zeam for my first email.

Segment VIII. Closing Thoughts
A. Burning Crusade
No. 1. Going to be awesome
No. 2. Learned my lesson about audio quality

All Your Alts Are Belong to Us

All of Aprillian's Alts, except for Aprillian, she's still being moved to the Baelgun Server.

I'm on the Road again

I'm on a train, so I won't try to put out a podcast today. I'm hoping to be able to do it before Monday night. By then hardly anyone will be listening to podcasts.

I did try a test of doing one on the train but the background noise was pretty loud. So stay tuned.

My First iTunes Review - Harsh ...

...but maybe true. So I've learned a valuable lesson, it's better to wait until I can be in a place that is quieter than to merely put out an episode on a schedule. I guess his comments could have been worse. He didn't say I was inacurate about my WoW stuff.

Although I don't agree with no structure and of course it's amateurish, hello, I am an amateur, LOL! But the best part is that someone listened and gave feed back, yippeee! As indicated in the show notes, I do try to follow a particular formula, and sometimes I do go off on a tangent but what podcaster doesn't?

As for the alts part, I was hoping for more feedback as to what direction to take that on. But I think I will do a special episode introducing my alts, as soon as I've moved them all to Baelgun. But I am still on a train heading to California. I was able to play WoW up until early Tues morning but then the patch came and as good as my data plan is on my cell phone, I can't download a 163 meg patch. I have been playing my beta characters although they took one of the beta servers offline for a while. I was toying with leaving some of my alts on Alleria and some on Baelgun, but I don't know.

Sorry again everyone for the bad sound quality. Maybe when I get to the hotel in SF tonight, I'l redo it. I would redo it now on the train but the train makes a lot of noise as well.

Anyone have suggestion for a tagline for my podcast? Please email me at ctraltwow@gmail.com.

Advertisment for CAW

Monday, January 8, 2007

Ooops I made a boo-boo

I was in such a hurry to get Episode 4 out, I accidentally put the segment for Favorite Places in twice. I will try to fix that when I get to a place with decent wifi. Trying to do it on the train just isn't possible. I apologize for that mistake.

Episode 4 - The Road to Burning Crusade

CTRL ALT WOW 004
The Road to Burning Crusade

I want to apologize for the quality of this podcast. I had to record it using my iPod and a Belking Tunetalk in a crowded train station. I actually did a version of the show before I left on my trip to San Francisco for MacWorld, but I didn't save it and I lost it all. I was kind of rushing because I had a 10pm train to catch. When I got to my next city and had a 7 hour layover, I decided to put together a podcast and get it out there. The first part was in the train station, but then I wanted some good internet access and found 2 hours for $2.95 at McDonald's. I spent 4 hours recording and putting it together. I tried really hard not to record when there was obsessive noise. I hope it wasn't too bad. Thanks for listening.

I WHAT’S GOING ON
A. Preparing for the Burning Crusade
i. Most upper level folks have been grinding I suppose but I’ve been gathering materials. Level 41 Hunter Treshel is mining her heart out. Level 10 Alliance is mining copper so she can send to my new Dranei, then she will be deleted. I feel kind of guilty knowing she’s working so hard only to be “killed” off.
ii. Took my 52 into Azshara to do Hunter Quest – Very hard and challenging solo but it was worth it. Found the limit of riding through mobs
B. After listening to some other podcasts about World of Warcraft, I realized I needed to cover the “why I play World of Warcraft” subject. I’ve touched on how I’ve come to play it, with some friends from Second Life, but I never really elaborated on why I love it so much.
1. My history in gaming:
a. A little Magic the Gathering. Mostly computer games. Hitchhiker’s Guide Text game. Played a version of Dungeons & Dragons on a DOS computer. Loved the quest.
b. Arcade Games Pacman in Japan, Centipede, Missile Command, Asteroid House of the Dead II – Going through the same game trying to do better. In HOD2, I knew which monsters were coming from where and when to get ready. It was repetitious but challenging.
c. A-Train, Sim City, Deus Ex, Marathon (the whole series)The Sims, Quake 3, TSO and the Second Life,.
2. I love virtual worlds. There is something very attractive about a place I can visit just by logging in on my computer. I loved playing Marathon and Quake 3. I played Quake 3 with a friend. She was in NY and I was in DC and we’d set up a server and played the game from start to finish. It was so much fun. We both had earpieces from our cell phones and we talked to each other. Being on my computer and interacting with another person was so much fun. The Sims were great because there were all the other aspects of interactivities, and this led to TSO, which was fun because of the interactions with other real people. Second Life was an awesome eyeopener because you could personalize and build. 3. But when I tried WoW and I found it had all the elements of the games I most loved. It had quests, like Quake 3 and Marathon, with the grouping aspects and virtual online like TSO and SL, along with the creative aspects and personalization. Alts brings with it the whole D&D game/Sims game
iii. Played my alliance character – 2 funny things happened both in Fargodeep Mine in Elwynn Forest
1. I came upon a player just standing in one of the tunnels. He was being attacked by two Kobold Tunnelers and he was going down. I took the two mobs down and was going to keep going, Pryl was farming copper. But then I realized some more mobs would be spawning, so I stayed nearby. I sent him a whisper telling him to wake up. After about 5 minutes he was back and fighting. A few min later he whispered a thanks back to me and said he had to chase his kid. I told him I thought as much and was glad to help.
2. Later, as I was mining, another behind me and tried to mine the same one I was mining. I don’t mind sharing but I could tell on the mini-map there was another node just a few feet ahead into the tunnel and this person seemed to be trying to sneak in. When I’m questing with a party, we usually take turns to get the exp, because if I hit it once and another miner hits it once, we both will get a point of exp. But this guy almost seemed to be hitting it as I was hitting to take it from me. I just laughed to myself and he ran ahead and got the next one after killing some mobs. I went ahead and killed a bunch more and got another node. Then I got a whisper that said “don’t take all the copper, I need some”. I kind of chuckled at that and said, “we all need copper, hon” and he wrote “yeah, but don’t take it all.” Now I’m perplexed and I said “so if I see some copper, I’m suppose to run by it?” I wasn’t trying to be mean, the nodes in Fargodeep respawn fairly quickly, so there was no danger of my “taking all the copper”
